in depth: Sunsets
As the sun sets at the end of the
day it can mean something different to us all – whether
you are driving home from work, or instead maybe just beginning
to make your way to work, or even just going about your life –
whatever you are doing, and in whatever part of the world –
you can guarantee that the sun is going to set over the horizon.
What
fascinates me as a photographer is the sheer variation between sunsets
– no two are ever the same. Their colours and intensities
can differ greatly, as can other factors such as the patterns and
reflections they create within their surroundings.
Which
is, fundamentally, the reason why I have produced this project –
to show a handful of the magnificent sunsets I have witnessed myself,
and been able to capture on camera. I have tried to choose a selection
which clearly demonstrates a variety of sunsets.
Most
of these images are pretty self explanatory, but I do have a couple
of things to mention. The first image was taken whilst I was in
Springbrooke National Park, Australia. The composition could be
better and there isn’t actually much to look at but I have
included it because, due to the altitude I was at, it was possible
to see the actual ‘line’ of night fall. This is much
harder to see the lower to sea level you are.
In
the second image, taken at Lake Garda, Italy, the sun doesn't actually
set over the lake due the height of the surrounding mountains, but
I like this image because it displays some of the subtle colours
and tones that you can get shortly after the sun has gone down.
There is a slight purple and blue hue to the scene which, along
with the semi-still lake, enhances the feeling of calmness.
