Picture of the month

The showcase area contains my most recent photographic projects, a specially selected 'picture of the month', and some of my published work.

Picture of the month: October

Spaces are defined by many things, such as boundaries, visability and environmental conditions. This month I have chosen this image taken from my space project which demonstrates many different kinds of spaces created by these different perspectives. In the image to the right you can see an underground car park, I was inspired to take this image by the natural light flooding in from the large whole in the ceiling. The light has created a visual space in an otherwise dingy London car park.

Projects in depth: Sunsets

As the sun sets at the end of the day it can mean something different to us all – whether you are driving home from work, or instead maybe just beginning to make your way to work, or even just going about your life – whatever you are doing, and in whatever part of the world – you can guarantee that the sun is going to set over the horizon.

What fascinates me as a photographer is the sheer variation between sunsets – no two are ever the same. Their colours and intensities can differ greatly, as can other factors such as the patterns and reflections they create within their surroundings.

Which is, fundamentally, the reason why I have produced this project – to show a handful of the magnificent sunsets I have witnessed myself, and been able to capture on camera. I have tried to choose a selection which clearly demonstrates a variety of sunsets.

Most of these images are pretty self explanatory, but I do have a couple of things to mention. The first image was taken whilst I was in Springbrooke National Park, Australia. The composition could be better and there isn’t actually much to look at but I have included it because, due to the altitude I was at, it was possible to see the actual ‘line’ of night fall. This is much harder to see the lower to sea level you are.

In the second image, taken at Lake Garda, Italy, the sun doesn't actually set over the lake due the height of the surrounding mountains, but I like this image because it displays some of the subtle colours and tones that you can get shortly after the sun has gone down. There is a slight purple and blue hue to the scene which, along with the semi-still lake, enhances the feeling of calmness.
